Forbidden Ground

1959
John Litster sat in the wooden rocker before the fire and stared into space, a look of total disbelief and astonishment on his face. Papers were piled next to him, compiled from the years of research the mining engineer had done since coming to Gold Hill, Oregon and experiencing the paranormal activities in one small section of the land he had purchased. He’d devoted countless hours to the task and now, as he was preparing to leave this world, he’d made a discovery that even he had difficulty comprehending.
Slowly, he reached for the papers next to him and leaned forward. He closed his eyes, as if unable to watch, and slowly tossed the papers into the flames. One by one the rest of his research joined them in the fire. In the end, he left only his original notes on the area and a single sentence, scrawled hastily across the front. He then rose from the chair and walked to the bed, lying down in exhaustion. Within moments he was gone, but his message remained for future generations.
His last words had been written, “The world isn’t ready for something this great.”
